Nanban- Tamil remake of 3 idiots
Saw Nanban today after a lot of convincing by friends… I was hesitating all this while as I had already seen 3 idiots(who hasn’t?) and wanted to save the dough for some other movie.. But since there isn’t any other good movie coming this month decided to watch ‘Nanban’ ..
The movie is an exact frame-by-frame copy of 3 idiots.. It may have deviated 10%(max) from the original but the rest of the movie is exactly the same…
Rancho–>Pari
Vijay tried his best to reproduce Aamir Khan’s ‘Rancho’ character but still its miles apart. Aamir’s character in the original is just perfect.. Aamir’s mannerisms like walking like a kid, putting hands deep inside the pockets, looking at everyone with wide eyes,being always excited etc, are all good idiosyncrasies of that character that is very hard to emulate by other actors..
Pia–>Ria
Ileana is a top Tollywood(Telugu) actress.. This is the first time I am watching her film.. Even though her expressions are good, Kareena scores in the acting department. Since Ileana doesn’t know Tamil the dubbing was off track in some places and hence her acting kinda looked artificial at times..
But in the looks department, Ileana is the winner (IMO ).. She is extremely hot! extremely!
Especially in the song sequences I was like “Whoa!” Time to look into her Telugu movies..
I had to hold my jaw so that it won't fall off suddenly.
The ViruS character played here by Sathyaraj is the most successful re-production(bad english 😐 ) from the original Virus from 3 idiots(Tightly clenched jaw, Speaking with Lisp, etc)..
The other 2 idiots were also well played by Jiiva and Srikanth…
The Villian(?) Silencer(played by Sathyan) isn’t as impressive as the ‘3 idiots’ Silencer but some of his lines were funnier here.. Especially the Teacher’s Day speech was a lot funnier in Tamil than in Hindi(even though the jokes were the same the wordings matched perfectly in Tamil)
This remake of 3 idiots is directed by Shankar ( of Robot & Sivaji fame).. This is his first ‘remake’ film and I think he has took the word ‘remake’ very seriously.. 95% of the camera angles,the dialogues are the same as 3 idiots…
Harris Jayaraj has composed some good songs for the movie.. Like all Shankar films the song sequences were visually mind-blowing… The sets that Shankar uses in the songs of his films are just unbelievably huge and magnificent… Like how some call him here he is truly Tamil Nadu’s Spielberg( Actually they say “India’s” but yeah whatever..).. IMO he is a good director(and expensive one).. All the 10 films he had directed before this were good entertainers which were also technically ahead of other movies.. He came into the industry with a bang with his debut flick ‘Gentleman’ and is still rocking the Tamil industry..
Anyway, even though its just a remake,Overall its a good watch. I enjoyed many scenes in the movie… It would have been a lot better if Vijay had worked hard a little more in bringing the Rancho character to the Tamil audience.. But I guess Aamir Khan is Aamir Khan… No one can emulate him.
